Educators Students Sponsors Portfolio
History

In 2000, an exhibition was held in Lucan, Ontario, Canada to show a portfolio of work by internationally known artists entitled "Africus -The First Johannesburg Biennale". This collection was created to express the artist's thoughts and feelings on the fall of apartheid in South Africa, and its effects on society worldwide. The High Commissioner of South Africa, Andre Jacquet opened the Lucan show, which contained works by Canadian artists Rudolf Bikkers and Hendrikus Bervoets. Along with the support of Mr. Jacquet and others, Rudolf and Hendrikus founded the Art for AIDSernational organization immediately thereafter, to assist children affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Sub-Saharan Africa. The organization was officially recognized by the Canadian Government as non-profit in 2001.

The International Portfolio

Twenty-five artists from around the world agreed to participate in the creation of the International Portfolio and have donated one hundred hand-made limited edition prints to the project. Once received by the organization, the production and creation of portfolio sets began. This portfolio was not only to raise funds for the children affected by HIV/AIDS, but also to raise the awareness of the pandemic through exhibitions and sales of the portfolios.

Kids for Kids Portfolio

These projects reflect the creative works of youth between the ages of 13 - 19, who are part of various school boards across North America, Europe, and Africa. These works are derived from students attending workshops and education on HIV/AIDS to create collages, which are then developed into signed original machine made limited edition prints. These prints are exhibited and sold with all the funds raised going to projects in sub-Saharan Africa benefiting the women children most affected by HIV/AIDS. Currently over 30 Kids For Kids portfolios have been created and are being sold in co-operation with these various associated school boards, including three portfolios, which were produced by students in South Africa.

Currently to date, both the International Portfolio, and the Kids for Kids Portfolio have been exhibited in North America, Europe, and Africa with endorsements from people such as Stephen Lewis, Judge Edwin Cameron (High Court of South Africa, Johannesburg), Albie Sachs (Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa)

Most recently, a number of corporations have begun to support these initiatives and have taken on the duel sponsorship of a North American and an African school, together creating a joint portfolio. For more information on this project please view our sponsorship page.
